2027: Obi’s Credentials Face Fresh Scrutiny As LP Chieftain Sues WAEC, UNN, NYSC

The academic credentials of former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi have come under fresh scrutiny following three separate suits filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suits were instituted by a Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi, against the West African Examinations Council, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the National Youth Service Corps.

Arabambi is asking the court to compel the three institutions to release official records relating to certificates attributed to Obi. The applications were filed under the Freedom of Information Act after the institutions allegedly failed to provide the requested information.

According to court documents reported by Vanguard, the suit against WAEC, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2064/2026, and the action against NYSC, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2063/2026, were filed on September 1, while the suit against UNN, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9.

The applicant is seeking access to records relating to a WAEC certificate bearing number SC042560, said to have been issued in June 1978 to Obi Gregory Onwubuase.

He is also asking UNN to provide relevant academic and graduation records connected to certificate number D000198, including entries in the university’s certificate register and records of degree awards.

In the case of NYSC, the applicant wants access to official records concerning certificate number 203495, reportedly issued to Obi Gregory Peter Onwubuase on May 1, 1986.

A key aspect of the legal action is that Arabambi is not asking the court, at this stage, to determine whether the certificates are genuine or forged.

Rather, he wants the institutions to disclose their own records so that the status and particulars of the certificates can be independently established.

The development comes as questions surrounding Obi’s academic records continue to feature in Nigeria’s political discourse ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Vanguard reports that WAEC declined an earlier request for information, citing provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, while UNN and NYSC allegedly neither granted the requests nor provided reasons for their refusal.

Arabambi is consequently asking the court to compel the institutions to provide the requested information and, where any information is withheld, identify the specific statutory provision relied upon.

No date has yet been fixed for the hearing of the suits. The outcome of the proceedings could provide further clarity on the records held by the three institutions concerning the certificates and names associated with Obi.
