President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of governing council executive members of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWDs) in line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2019.

This was made known in a statement by the Presidency via its verified Twitter handle on Tuesday.

The commission, which is an agency under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and Social development (FMHADMSD), will be chaired by Hussaini Kangiwa, a former House of Representatives member from Kebbi State.

Abba Ibrahim from the North East was named the Executive Secretary, while six other executive members, drawn from each geopolitical zone in the country, were listed to make up the governing council.

The Presidency, quoting some provisions of the Act, noted that the commission shall be “headed by a part-time chairman and six members who shall be persons with disabilities representing the geo-political zones of the federation”.

It added that the newly appointed executives shall, however, be “subject to confirmation of the Senate for a four-year term of office in the first instance, and may be reappointed for a second term of four years and no more”.

“The Executive Secretary, who shall be responsible to the Council for the implementation of the policies and administration of the daily affairs of the Commission shall also be a Person with Disability with a five-year tenure in the first instance, and may be reappointed for a second term and no more,” the Presidency added.

Other members of the executives and their geo-politcal zones are: Oparaku Onyejelam Jaja (Member – South East), Philomena Isioma Konwea (Member – South South), Omopariola Busuyi Oluwasola (Member – South West), Amina Rahma Audu (Member – North West), Esther Andrew Awu (Member – North Central), Abba Audu Ibrahim (Member – North East) and James David Lalu (Executive Secretary – North Central).
