Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu and a leading governorship aspirant in Oyo State, has said he is best positioned to emerge as the next governor, amid reports of an alleged preferred candidate by the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Adelabu stated that his political experience, long-standing relationships and contributions to the state’s development place him ahead of other contenders.

“Even if they are going to pick any governorship candidate, I believe I deserve it more,” he said.

He dismissed suggestions that the Olubadan has an anointed candidate, emphasising that the monarch remains a father figure to all political actors in Ibadanland.

“The Olubadan is the father of all. We have a long-standing political relationship, the Ladojas and the Adelabus,” Adelabu added.

His comments come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with aspirants across parties positioning for party primaries in Oyo State.

Adelabu, who contested the governorship election in 2019, has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political landscape and is widely expected to seek the ticket of his party again.

The debate over succession has intensified in recent weeks, with stakeholders in Ibadanland weighing in on zoning, political alliances and the role of traditional institutions in the selection process.

The Olubadan stool, regarded as one of the most influential traditional institutions in Oyo State, often plays a symbolic role in fostering unity among political actors, though it does not officially determine party nominations.
