The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed as false a widely circulated notice alleging the suspension of its student loan disbursement programme.

In an official statement released on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the agency clarified that no decision has been taken to halt the scheme, urging the public to disregard the misleading information and rely solely on verified communication channels.

The fraudulent notice, which gained traction online, purported that “due to unforeseen operational circumstances… NELFUND has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause the student loan disbursement programme with immediate effect.”

Reacting to the claim, NELFUND categorically denied issuing such a directive, stating: “This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive.”

The agency further advised students, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders to seek updates exclusively through its official platforms to avoid falling victim to misinformation.

The clarification comes amid heightened public interest in the student loan initiative. According to the Federal Government, the programme has supported over one million students since its inception, significantly enhancing access to tertiary education nationwide.

Government data also indicates that the intervention has cost over N1.1 billion, while more than 160,000 young Nigerians have benefited from complementary digital skills training programmes linked to the scheme
