The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced laboratory testing of selected sanitary pad brands for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) following concerns over the safety of menstrual products sold in Nigeria.

The agency said the move follows findings from a 2024 study that detected 20 VOCs in 65 sanitary pad samples. NAFDAC also disclosed that it is investigating a complaint involving a specific sanitary pad brand, with tests covering microbial limits and skin irritation.

NAFDAC said any additional regulatory measures will be guided by scientific evidence, risk assessment and consultations with relevant stakeholders.
