The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has been asked to stop the Labour Party (LP) and its National Chairman, Barr Julius Abure, from proceeding with plans to hold a secret National convention, scheduled for March 27.

The court, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/397/ 2024, filed on Monday, by a Labour Party member, Mr. Lawrence Erewele, through his team of lawyers led by Emeka Etiaba (SAN), was also asked to direct the Inspector General of Police (6th Defendant) to stop the “Labour Party, Julius Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Chief Clement Ojukwu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)”, who are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th defendants respectively, from “embarking in any form of illegality or unlawful act, including convening and holding of illegal/unlawful National Convention planned for 27th March or any other date.”

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had earlier asked Abure to shelve his planned secret National convention of the Labour Party earlier scheduled for March 27th in Abia State.

The NLC had in a statement on Friday, March 15, accused Abure of running the Labour Party as a Sole Administrator by secretly scheduling a supposed National Convention of the Party without consulting stakeholders.

Consequently, members of the NLC had on Wednesday, 20th March, occupied the National headquarters of the Labour Party in Abuja, calling for Abure’s sack as National Chairman of the party.

According to the suit, the Plaintiff, Lawrence Erewele, argued that Abure’s secret planned convention, which lacked the authority of Party stakeholders and general consultation of party members, violates several Articles of the Labour Party constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
