Gunmen on Thursday killed a yet-to-be-identified Assistant Superintendent of Police along Ikorodu-Ijebu-Ode Road, in the Imota, Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

City Round gathered that after perpetrating the crime, the suspects carted away two rifles, as the deceased policeman’s colleagues scampered to safety.

Speaking with our correspondent, a source in the area said the policemen were carrying out an operation on the highway when the gunmen, while plying the highway, shot at them.

The source explained that the attack happened around 7.30pm on Thursday, adding that the situation caused tension and affected vehicular movements on the highway.

The source said, “Yesterday (Thursday), armed men attacked some policemen at a point along the Ikorodu-Ijebu-Ode Road, Imota, and shot a policeman to death.

“We gathered that the policeman that died was an Assistant Superintendent of Police and the gunmen also stole two rifles. The policemen were on the highway when the gunmen attacked them around 7.30pm.”

As of the time of filing this report, our correspondent learnt that while other policemen who escaped from the scene had reported back to the station, the whereabouts of one of the armed policemen was still unknown.

Efforts to get a reaction from the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, proved abortive, as he had yet to respond to calls and a text message sent to his mobile phone as of the time of filing this report.

Gunmen had been unleashing mayhem on Lagos residents, including policemen, in recent times.

On Wednesday, gunmen killed no fewer than three persons on Gowon Estate, in the Ipaja area of the state.

Residents, while being concerned about their safety during the attack on 41 Road, around the Union Bank block on the estate, raised the alarm and alerted the police authorities, who swooped in and restored normalcy in the area.

Also, on August 25, 2022, gunmen killed a yet-to-be-identified policeman attached to a new generation bank around Cassette Bus Stop, Coker Aguda, in the Surulere area of the state.
