The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers following widespread public outrage over a viral video showing them allegedly making ethnically insensitive remarks to a motorist during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
The officers, identified as ASP Elomore Sodayo, Inspector Adefila Adewale, Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi and Inspector Odusola Peter, were arrested on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, and are currently under investigation.
The viral footage captured a heated exchange between the officers and a motorist, reportedly a United Kingdom returnee, who accused them of intimidation, ethnic profiling and attempted extortion. During the confrontation, one of the officers allegedly remarked that the driver would have been detained if he were of Igbo ethnicity, a statement that sparked widespread condemnation on social media.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of culpability of each officer involved.
Jimoh reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, discipline and respect for the rights of all citizens, stressing that the Force does not condone misconduct, incivility or any form of ethnic bias capable of undermining public confidence.
He assured Nigerians that the investigation would be transparent and that any officer found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
