The Federal Government has extended the suspension of the new electricity tariff by one week.

Recall the government had suspended the implementation of the new tariff, following an agreement reached with the labour unions, leading to the call off of a nationwide protests.

At the expiration of the suspension on Sunday, another one week suspension was agreed by both the government and the labour unions at a meeting held in Abuja.

It was also agreed that one million meters will be distributed to consumers.

Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour, who also spoke after the meeting, said the N1.7 billion daily power subsidy would be inserted into the national budget.

“The two-week extension for electricity tariffs which expired this week will be extended by another one week,” said Ngige.

“The immediate relief would be provided to citizens for a two to three-month period (not later than 31st of December, 2020), being the timeline for the conclusion of an extended scope of work for the Technical Committee.”
