Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has predicted that coronavirus cases may rise to 120,000 in the state in July and August.

Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja while giving updates on COVID-19 in the state, Abayomi attributed the increase in cases to the expansion of sample collection to the 20 local governments.

He said, given the current trend of the virus in the state, after confirming 183 cases on Thursday night; its highest single day record, Lagos is expected to reach its peak during that period.

The health commissioner stated: “Just a month ago, on April 7, we saw 10 cases per day. Two weeks later it was 32, then 70 cases. We are now seeing above 100 cases per day. This shows our graph is moving in a gentle incline upwards.

“We definitely have not reached the peak of our outbreak. We suspect that the peak will happen sometime in July or August and so we are preparing for the oncoming; we are increasing our capacity and strategies to deal with this situation.”

According to the Lagos State Health Ministry, as at 7th May, 2020, 183 new cases of #COVID19 Infection confirmed while total confirmed cases in Lagos now 1,507. Total Discharged now 406 with deaths at 33.

Abayomi also disclosed that many people, who tested positive for the disease in the state are on the run from being taken to isolation centres for treatment. Adding that it is one of the reasons the state still had unoccupied beds at the isolation centres despite recording more cases than its bed-capacity.

He stated: “There is also a situation that we experience, when we test people, sometimes they find it difficult to find them. The ambulances will go into community, people will flee their homes, and they make it difficult for us to find them.

“Some of them sometimes shut their doors or they leave their environment to avoid being admitted.”

The commissioner lamented that the patients do not answer their phones as well.

“The ministry has no time to start hunting people around the community.

“If you have tested positive, we expect you to cooperate with us and make yourself available so that you can be admitted and assessed.

“Our isolation facilities are really comfortable, it is not like the Ebola days, we have made a lot of improvements.

“Members of the executive and senior people in government have been admitted into those facilities. If I test positive, I will go to one of those facilities,” Abayomi stated.
