Commercial-scale trapping of wild waterbirds is threatening the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands in Jigawa State, with conservation organisation Wild Hausa raising concerns over the impact of increasing bird harvesting on the internationally recognised wetland ecosystem.
Field documentation reportedly showed large quantities of trapped and processed waterbirds being harvested daily in Gatafa community, Hadejia Local Government Area, with species including rails and gallinules among those affected.
Conservationists warned that the scale of the activity could exceed the wetlands’ natural replenishment rate, disrupting the ecosystem and threatening both resident and migratory bird populations.
Wild Hausa also cautioned that continued over-exploitation could eventually undermine the livelihoods of communities that depend on the wetlands. The organisation has called for community-led conservation, stronger enforcement, alternative livelihoods and awareness campaigns to address the problem without leaving vulnerable residents without income.
