Hours after the death of the immediate past group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru was announced, President Muhammadu Buhari gave the approval for the reconstitution of the state-run oil company board, as the term of the current members appointed in 2016 has expired.

Baru died at 60 and was only two months away from his 61st birthday.

The former NNPC boss, whose death was announced by the current GMD of the corporation, Mele Kyari, on Saturday morning, was said to have died late last night.

“My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night,” Kyari tweeted.

“He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.”

Hours after Baru’s death was announced, the Special Adviser to the President, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina disclosed the new members of the NNPC board approved by the president.

The new members spread across the geopolitical zones of the country are; Mohammed Lawal (North West), Tajudeen Umar (North East), Adamu Mahmood Attah (North Central), Senator Magnus Abe (South South), Dr Stephen Dike (South East), and Chief Pius Akinyelure (South West).

The new board will be in place for three years.
