The Federal Government has reopened all 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country weeks after they were shut down over escalating insecurity, including mass abductions of schoolchildren and attacks in several states.
The reopening followed what the government described as sustained engagement with security agencies and a review of safety conditions around the schools, which were closed in November 2025 amid growing fears for the safety of students and staff nationwide.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Education said the decision was taken to ensure that students could continue their education without compromising their safety. The statement was signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
“The Federal Government has reaffirmed its responsibility to protect every Nigerian child and to uphold their constitutional right to education in a secure setting,” the statement said. “The decision to reopen the Unity Colleges reflects the administration’s determination to ensure that no child is denied access to education due to security concerns.”
The ministry explained that the reopening comes as many students are concluding their December academic programmes, while others have already completed their examinations. It added that arrangements had been put in place to guarantee a safe and conducive learning environment across all Unity Colleges.
According to the ministry, education remains a core component of the administration’s human capital development agenda and a critical driver of national growth, stressing that safeguarding the academic calendar remains a top priority.
“Education remains a central pillar of this administration’s human capital development agenda. Accordingly, the government remains committed to safeguarding the academic calendar,” the statement added.
The schools were closed following a wave of insecurity that affected parts of the North-West, North-East, North-Central and sections of the South, raising concerns among parents and prompting calls for stronger protection of educational institutions.
The ministry expressed appreciation to parents, guardians, school administrators and students for their patience and cooperation during the closure, while reiterating the government’s resolve to sustain a secure, stable and uninterrupted education system nationwide.
It also assured the public that collaboration with relevant security agencies would be sustained to ensure the continued safety, welfare and well-being of students and staff in all Federal Unity Colleges.
