The Rivers house of assembly has withdrawn impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state.

The 24 lawmakers who signed the impeachment proceedings against the governor withdrew the notice on Wednesday.

Martin Amaewhule, speaker of the house, announced the lawmakers’ decision during their sitting at the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The lawmakers hinged their decision on the resolutions reached during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

There has been tension in Rivers over the rift between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).

In the wake of the crisis, Wike’s associates in the Rivers house of assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor.

Fubara’s allies kicked against the impeachment move.

Thereafter, 27 lawmakers defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Subsequently, Edison Ehie, factional speaker of the Rivers assembly, declared the seats of the lawmakers who defected vacant.

Amid the political crisis, some commissioners resigned from Fubara’s cabinet.

On Monday, Tinubu met with Wike, Fubara and Rivers stakeholders to resolve the crisis.

Some of the resolutions reached at the meeting were that: All matters instituted in courts by the different factions should be “immediately” withdrawn, the 27 lawmakers who defected to the APC should be taken back as members of the assembly, and the impeachment proceedings against Fubara should be withdrawn
