Some group of people for and against the probe of Godswill Akpabio, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs have Monday staged a protest at the National Assembly complex as the House Committee probing the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) get set to begin hearing with the minister.
MERIDIAN SPY reported earlier the minister was seen at the hearing room of the national assembly at 11:20am on Monday.
Akpabio is facing corruption allegations levelled against him by Joy Nunieh, a former acting director of the NDDC.
Nunieh alleged that during her time as head of the comission, she was asked to spend N10 billion as Christmas bonus.
She said rejecting the idea contributed to her removal from office, while also accusing Akpabio of hijacking the forensic audit of the commission ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.
One of the groups of protesters who are anti-Akpabio, led by Okeahialam Cherech, are calling for the suspension and arrest of the minister pending the conclusion of the investigation by the committee.
The Cherech-led group, chanting anti-Akpabio song, called for the continuation of the probe, adding that the chilling revelations made so far had warranted the sack and arrest of the minister.
The pro-Akpabio group, however, with the name, ‘Niger Delta Development Initiative’, led by one Phil Robbert insisted that the forensic audit must go on.
The group said the attack on the minister was unwarranted and that Nigerians should allow the former Akwa Ibom governor to work for the good of Niger Delta people and not to be distracted.
Armed policemen were however sighted at the entrance of the complex, perhaps to prevent breakdown of law and order.
More details soon.
