The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued new certificate to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.
Recall Obaseki was disqualified from contesting the state governorship primary of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) over, among other things, defects in his NYSC certificates in obtained in 1980.
According to the APC screening committee, an alphabet was missing in the governor’s surname which read Obasek instead of Obaseki.
However, the same certificates rejected by the ruling party, was accepted by the screening committee of the Peoples democratic Party (PDP), as Obaseki, after defecting to the main opposition party, went on to emerge the candidate for the September governorship election.
In a letter dated June 19, 2020, signed by one Okonofua K N, on behalf of the NYSC DG, the corps, having carried out an investigation, found that there is a need for reissuance of the certificate to reflect the correct name of the governor.
“I refer to your letter referenced EOG/ABI/99/VOL IV/172 dated 18th June, 2020, on the above subject matter please,” the letter read.
“I am directed to inform you that after investigation, the management of the National Youth Service Corps has approved that a new Certificate of National Service reflecting the Surname OBASEKI be produced as the earlier Certificate number 063107 dated 6th August, 1980 has been cancelled due to error in the surname i.e OBASEK.
“Accept the assurances of the Director-General’s regard.”
