President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the gradual relaxing of lockdown imposed in the country’s capital-Abuja, Lagos and Ogun State, effective from Monday, 4th May, 2020, due to the rising cases of coronavirus disease in the country.
Speaking during his nationwide broadcast on Monday, the President said the approval was in line with recommendations of the Presidential Task Force PTF on COVID-19 and ‘the various Federal Government committees that have reviewed socio-economic matters and the Nigeria Governors Forum NGF’.
Buhari explained that the Federal and State Governments, in the last two weeks of the lockdown which was announced on April 13, jointly and collaboratively worked hard on how to balance both the need to protect health and the preservation of livelihoods, while also keeping in mind the country’s peculiar circumstances.
He said it was based on the above that the approval was made, adding that it however ‘will be followed strictly with aggressive reinforcement of testing and contact tracing measures while allowing the restoration of some economic and business activities in certain sectors’.
