The Federal Government has clarified that only schools designated by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) as exam centres will be allowed to re-open.
Recall the government announced Monday secondary schools across the nation would be reopened from August 4 for exit classes only, to prepare them ahead for the August 17 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
At the briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba said WAEC had agreed that only exams peculiar to Nigeria would be taken from September 5 to September 14, while exams common to all West Africa countries would proceed from September 17.
Nwajiuba stated that Nigeria would domesticate its own time-table for the exams while revision classes would start from yesterday (Monday).
He also stated that a report on the states’ preparedness was expected on July 31, adding this would inform which centres would open, how they would open and to address all gaps.
“All the state governors, commissioners for education and all other stakeholders had given their commitment to providing teachers while WAEC would provide invigilators to ensure seamless conduct at the centres,” the minister added.
Meanwhile, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar commended the government for finally yielding to the call for school resumption amid the pandemic, to enable the students sit for the exam.
“The announcement by the FMoE that the WAEC exam will hold in August is commendable. Learning must go on, especially for exit stage students. I do hope, however, that students writing the exams are well prepared through home study during the lockdown. I wish them the very best,” Atiu wrote on Twitter on Monday.
“I commend the FMoE for acceding to the patriotic counsel that myself and other well-meaning Nigerians and organisations gave with regards to not cancelling the WASSCE exams. – AA.”
