2027: Kwankwaso Is Unbeatable in Kano – Victor Umeh

Senator Victor Umeh has declared that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, remains a formidable political force in Kano and would be difficult to defeat in the state ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Umeh, who represents Anambra Central in the Senate, dismissed suggestions that recent political developments in Kano had significantly weakened Kwankwaso’s influence, describing claims from the camp of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as political noise.

The senator maintained that Kwankwaso would retain his stronghold in Kano if the 2027 election is conducted in a credible, free and fair manner.

His comments come against the backdrop of a major political realignment in Kano, with Governor Yusuf and several political figures who were previously associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement now operating within the All Progressives Congress.

Governor Yusuf had earlier declared that Kano was committed to delivering victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 elections. The governor also directed political appointees who had not registered with the APC to do so.

The development has intensified the political contest between the APC and Kwankwaso’s camp ahead of 2027.

Kwankwaso’s supporters continue to point to his longstanding political network and influence across Kano, while APC figures argue that the defection of Governor Yusuf and other former members of the Kwankwasiyya movement has substantially altered the political equation in the state.

A recent APC assessment of the situation offered a sharply contrasting position. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, a senior Kano APC figure, argued that Tinubu could defeat Kwankwaso in the state, citing the movement of former Kwankwasiyya leaders into the APC and the governor’s alignment with the ruling party.

Bichi also projected that the APC could secure at least 70 percent of the votes cast in Kano, reflecting the growing confidence within the ruling party ahead of the election.

The competing claims underscore the significance of Kano in the 2027 presidential contest. With its large voting population and history of decisive electoral swings, the state is expected to remain one of the major battlegrounds in the election.

Umeh, however, remains convinced that Kwankwaso’s political strength in Kano should not be underestimated.

The 2027 contest is therefore shaping up as a major test of whether Kwankwaso’s longstanding influence in Kano can withstand the realignment of political forces around Governor Yusuf and the APC.
