Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State.
Mustapha, who announced his resignation in a statement on Thursday, said the decision followed weeks of consultations with stakeholders, supporters, constituents across Kwara Central and other well-meaning Kwarans.
The senator said his decision was informed by recent developments within the APC in Kwara State, which, according to him, no longer sufficiently aligned with his political convictions and the aspirations of the people he represents.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly,” Mustapha said, adding that extensive consultations and engagements preceded his decision to leave the ruling party.
He said his political philosophy remained anchored on the principles of people, purpose and service, stressing that it was necessary to chart a new course when a political platform no longer reflected those values.
“As a politician, I have always believed that politics must be about people, principles and purpose,” he said.
“Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course.”
Mustapha, popularly known as Turaki of Ilorin Emirate, expressed appreciation to the APC leadership, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained during his time in the party.
He, however, assured his constituents, supporters and political associates that his resignation from the APC would not affect his commitment to serving the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria.
“To my constituents, supporters, political associates and stakeholders in Kwara State and beyond, I assure you that while my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged,” he said.
The senator added: “I remain steadfast in my service to the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria at large.”
The resignation comes amid evolving political alignments in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
