At least 31 Nigerian state governments spent an estimated N252.26 billion on security-related activities between January and June 2026, despite the continued challenges of killings, kidnapping and banditry across the country.
An analysis of state fiscal performance reports showed that Kogi recorded the highest expenditure at N34.67 billion, followed by Plateau with N23.69 billion and Bauchi with N22.35 billion.
The spending covered areas including security equipment, security personnel, security votes and operations, ministries and special advisers on security, as well as security trust funds.
The combined expenditure represents a 232.6 per cent increase from the N75.84 billion recorded by the states covered in 2025.
However, the significant increase in spending comes against the backdrop of persistent insecurity in several parts of the country, raising questions about the effectiveness and impact of security expenditure.
