Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has signed the Ondo State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law, 2026, introducing a strengthened legal and regulatory framework for electricity generation, transmission and distribution across the state.
The new law is aimed at giving Ondo greater control over its electricity market and creating a clearer framework for private-sector participation in power generation and distribution.
The development builds on Ondo’s earlier transition to state-level electricity regulation. Since October 2024, the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB) has had regulatory oversight of the state’s electricity market following the transfer of responsibilities from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The amendment comes as Nigeria continues to decentralise its electricity sector under the Electricity Act 2023, which allows states to establish and regulate their own electricity markets, subject to the applicable federal framework.
The state government expects the new framework to support investment, improve electricity access and reliability, and strengthen regulation of power-sector activities within Ondo.
