CJ Reassigns Kanu’s Case to New Judge After Outburst
The case involving Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been officially reassigned to a new judge, marking a significant development in his prolonged legal battle.
Reports that Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed this on Saturday, revealing that the legal team received two official letters regarding the case. One letter came from the Chief Justice of Nigeria in response to a request for administrative intervention, while the other, from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, formally announced the case reassignment.
Expressing his readiness for trial, Kanu reiterated his confidence in his innocence and his willingness to defend himself in court. He also directed his legal team to publicly appreciate the Chief Justice of Nigeria for addressing the matter swiftly.
Ejimakor noted that judicial delays since September 2024 had posed serious threats to Kanu’s constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial. He emphasized that Kanu had always been prepared for trial but was hindered by disruptions following the recusal of the previous judge.
With the case now reassigned, Ejimakor said the legal team would focus on Kanu’s defense, ensuring that due process is followed. He also acknowledged public support in advocating for the reassignment, describing it as a necessary step toward justice.
