The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three officers attached to the Isheri Division for allegedly extorting N150,000 from two travelers along the Ikeja-Berger Road.
The arrest followed a viral social media post by one of the victims, Ramadan Adenola, who detailed the incident on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. According to Adenola, he and his coworker, identified as @GbReigns, were stopped by armed policemen while traveling in a Bolt ride from their hotel in Ikeja to Berger.
Despite conducting a search and finding nothing incriminating, the officers reportedly forced the duo into their vehicle and took them to the Isheri Police Station.
“At the station, one officer appeared particularly interested in my phone,” Adenola wrote. “After failing to find anything suspicious, he suddenly fixated on my Binance app and labeled it as ‘incriminating evidence.’”
He alleged that the officers then led them to an unfinished building behind the station, where they demanded N2 million for their release.
“After negotiations, they eventually settled for N150,000, which they forced me to withdraw and hand over before we were released,” Adenola stated.
Following the viral post, the Lagos State Police Command launched an investigation. On Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the officers in a statement.
“The three police officers have been identified and taken into custody by their Divisional Police Officer (DPO),” Hundeyin said. “The extorted money has also been recovered, and the DPO is working to reach the complainant.”
He added that Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, had ordered the officers to be transferred to the Provost’s office at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, for disciplinary action.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over police misconduct in Lagos, with authorities vowing to take firm action against any officer found guilty of extortion or abuse of power
