A tragic incident occurred on January 17, 2025, when an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer was shot dead during a mission to arrest suspected Yahoo Boys. The operation was launched from the EFCC’s zonal office in Enugu and took a deadly turn as the suspects engaged the officers in a gunfight.

The officer, identified as an assistant superintendent, had recently completed a promotional exam and was among the team sent to apprehend the cybercrime suspects. As the EFCC agents closed in, the suspects began firing, leading to a chaotic and lethal encounter. The assistant superintendent was fatally shot at the scene, marking a grim outcome for the operation.
Another EFCC officer sustained critical injuries and is receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. The suspect taken into custody during the operation has yet to be publicly identified. It remains unclear whether the suspect has secured legal representation.
