The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2025 budget proposal, saying it’s unrealistic, hence lacks sincerity. The opposition party claims that the budget is detrimental to the Nigerian people and would worsen insecurity, poverty, and despair across the nation if implemented.
In a statement on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the budget was anti-people, warning that its execution could deepen the country’s economic and social challenges. The PDP particularly took issue with what it called unverified economic figures and unsubstantiated campaign promises embedded in the proposal.
President Tinubu presented the N49.7 trillion 2025 budget during a joint session of the National Assembly, with allocations for defense and security (N4.91 trillion), infrastructure (N4.06 trillion), health (N2.48 trillion), and education (N3.52 trillion).
However, the PDP described these allocations as insufficient and lacking in clear priorities, alleging that the budget fails to address key sectors like agriculture, electricity, petroleum, and small and medium-scale enterprises.
“The N47.9 trillion 2025 federal budget is an anti-people proposal that, if implemented, will plunge the nation deeper into insecurity, poverty, and hopelessness,” the statement read. The PDP also expressed disappointment over the President’s claim of an 85% performance rate for the 2024 budget, questioning the lack of a breakdown between capital and recurrent expenditures.
The opposition party also criticized the budget address for being more about campaign rhetoric than a concrete plan for national progress.
“The budget address was filled with unsubstantiated economic statistics, false promises, and conjured performance claims. It lacked clear strategies to address insecurity, revive the economy, create jobs, and reduce the cost of living,” the PDP statement continued.
The PDP found particularly “ludicrous” Tinubu’s assertion that the 2025 budget would reduce inflation from 34.6% to 15% and improve the Naira’s exchange rate from N1,700 to N1,500 per dollar.
The party urged the National Assembly to reject the 2025 budget in its current form and use its constitutional powers to restructure it, prioritizing economic growth and the welfare of citizens. “With a staggering N134.3 trillion debt and no tangible investment in the productive sector, these projections are nothing more than voodoo economics,” the PDP said.
The PDP concluded by urging the National Assembly to ensure that the budget truly reflects the needs of Nigerians, calling for provisions that are essential for economic recovery and social stability.
