The Edo State House of Assembly has enacted a resolution suspending the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the state’s 18 local government councils for a two-month period.
Consequently, the legislative body has directed the leaders of the councils’ legislative arms to assume leadership roles within their respective councils during this period.
The decision to suspend the local government officials came after a motion was introduced by Isibor Adeh, the lawmaker for Esan North East One, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, representing Akoko-Edo Two.
The move follows a formal petition from the state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who raised concerns about the local government officials’ refusal to submit their financial records to the state government. In his letter, the governor described their actions as both insubordinate and grossly inappropriate, urging the House to take appropriate action.
During the debate on the motion, 14 lawmakers voted in favor of the suspension, while six opposed it, and three others abstained from voting.
House Speaker Blessing Agbebaku had previously instructed that all members contribute to the discussion. Following the debate, the Speaker tasked the House Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, with conducting a headcount to determine the number of members who supported or opposed the suspension.
