Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ramatu Aliyu has joined the call for castration as penalty for those convicted for rape in the country.
Aliyu stated this while distributing palliatives to the FCT chapters of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Nigeria Football Association of Coaches.
She opined that doing so would serve as deterrent to potential sexual offenders and curb the inhumane act in the country.
The FCT minister said the administration is working closely with security agencies and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to push for serious institutional framework that would ensure justice is served to victims of such act.
“We will involve every member of the community in this battle against rape,” she said.
“Just recently, we are in search of one offender, and definitely we will nip it in the bud. And in conjunction with all the security outfits, NAPTIP, in the Federal Capital Territory, we are on the watch, and for any offender that we get, we will take it to any length to ensure that he is not fit to live.
“We are also pushing for serious institutional framework that will ensure that justice is done. It is not enough to just jail such person, definitely punishment like castration will do.
“When we kill them, they die and do not remember anything. Therefore, they should be castrated and roam the streets and remain inactive.”
In a related development, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) published names and photographs of some persons convicted of sexual offences in Nigeria.
NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, having made the publication on Saturday, promised to release more names as soon as they are convicted.
Okah-Donli said the agency “is determined to naming and shaming all sex offenders”.
“Here are the identities of convicted sex offenders as seen on the Nigeria Sex Offender Register. @naptipnigeria Is determined to naming and shaming all sex offenders. More names will be published as the convictions keep coming in. #saynotorape #endrape#sexoffenderregister,” The NAPTIP DG tweeted.
The list contained the names of ten males, their addresses, offences and year of conviction. Six persons were convicted in 2019, while the remaining four were sentenced in 2020; they were arraigned on charges of incest and rape.
The names of the sex offenders listed are Friday Elijah, Shehu Abubakar, Asateru Gabriel, Adenekan Adegboyega, and Emeka Akile.
Others are Olaoluwa David Ajibade, Vincent Akande, Abdulkareem Yahaya Danmallam, Yusuf Francis Kyemang, and Basiru Adeyanju.
