A leading pan-african non-governmental organization, Uwagboe Youth and Students Foundation, has condemned the rape and gruesome murder of University of Benin (UNIBEN) undergraduate, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
In a statement signed and made available to MERIDIAN SPY, the Executive Director of the NGO, Prince Osawe Uwagboe described the incident as ‘disheartening, inhumane and unfortunate’. “We are worried that such a evil is still happening in our clime; the rape and murder of Uwa is disheartening and alarming,” he said.
Mr Uwagboe also called on the government and law enforcement agencies to launch an investigation into the matter and ensure that those behind the act are brought to book. “We are also using this opportunity to call on the government and our law enforcement agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the matter,” he noted.
Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 22-year-old UNIBEN undergraduate was raped and murdered in a gruesome manner in Ikpoba Hill area of Benin city, Edo State.
The Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu, has since ordered for thorough investigation into the rape and killing of the undergraduate.
President Muhammadu Buhari had also described the incident as unfortunate, adding that he had ordered speedy investigative process on the issue.
Nigerians from all walks of life have come out to condemn the act – describing it as wicked and gruesome.
The Edo State Police Command, had on June 1 announced the arrest of a suspect connected to the deceased. The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in Benin.
