Russia Downs 337 Ukrainian Drones in Largest Aerial Attack of the Year
In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Russia’s Defence Ministry announced on Tuesday that it had intercepted and destroyed 337 Ukrainian drones overnight, marking what officials describe as the most extensive drone assault on Russian territory this year.
According to the state-run TASS news agency, Moscow’s air defences were particularly strained, with 91 drones reportedly shot down over the capital region alone. The attacks also targeted Russia’s western border regions, with 126 drones intercepted over Kursk and 38 over Bryansk.
While Russian officials emphasized the effectiveness of their air defence systems, they confirmed civilian casualties. In Moscow, at least one person was killed, and three others were injured. The governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, reported that drone debris caused damage to multiple apartments in Ramenskoye, forcing the evacuation of 12 residents, including children.
The scale of the attack prompted Russia’s aviation authority to suspend flights at Moscow’s four major airports—Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—citing security concerns. The disruptions extended to Nizhny Novgorod, more than 400 kilometres east of Moscow.
Such airspace restrictions have become routine in Russia following Ukrainian drone strikes, as Kyiv continues to extend its military operations beyond its borders. Ukrainian forces, bolstered by Western support, have increasingly targeted strategic locations inside Russia, a move seen as both a defensive response to the prolonged invasion and an attempt to disrupt Russian military infrastructure.
The details of the attack remain unverified by independent sources, but the scale suggests a shift in Ukraine’s strategy—leveraging drone warfare to push back against Russian advances in the ongoing conflict.
