Bayero University, Kano (BUK) is spending over N100,000 to host dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its 39th convocation ceremony.
The four-day staggered event begins on Wednesday, 12th, with the award of degrees, diplomas, and certificates, while the grand finale, fixed for Saturday, 14th February 2025, with the award of an honorary degree.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, on Monday, gave the cost implications of hosting the four-day event at a pre-convocation ceremony.
The VC disclosed that a large percentage of the expenses would be burned for accommodation of dignitaries expecting to come from far and near as well as multiple publications, among other costs.
The Vice Chancellor confessed that the budget of hosting the 39th convocation was the most expensive in history and attributed the cost to inflation.
According to Abbas, 176 undergraduate students graduated with first class degrees out of 8,769 graduates from 18 faculties. Besides, 275 postgraduate students will receive PhD degrees, 2,590 bagged master degrees, and 535 received postgraduate diplomas.
Those selected for the honorary doctorate degrees are former military Governor of Kano State, Col. Sani Bello retired and owner of A A Rano Nigeria Limited and Rano Air, Alh. Auwalu Abdullahi Rano.
Also, three renowned professors from the university would be decorated with distinguished emeritus professor status.
The awardees are Professor of Education administration and planning, Garba Dahuwa Azare, a renowned professor of geography, Julius Afolabi Falola, and Musa Mohammed Borodo, consultant physician with Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital AKTH and professor of medicine BUK.
