In a shocking display of corruption, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, caught some civil servants diverting documents from the state’s health ministry. The governor was on his way to inspect some projects when he stumbled upon a truck loading documents from the ministry’s warehouse.¹
Upon inquiry, the governor discovered that the documents, including patients’ data registers, cards, and other sensitive materials, were being sold without government approval. The governor was furious, describing the act as sabotage to the government’s efforts to reposition the health sector.
“You are selling government documents without approval on a Saturday afternoon,” the governor said. “Our hospitals in the rural areas are requesting for registers and data entry forms and hospital cards. Sadly, the ones the government has produced are being sold by you”.
The governor ordered the arrest of the civil servants involved, and they have been handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution. The incident has highlighted the need for greater accountability and transparency in the management of government resources.
