Suspected Suicide Bomber Killed Near Military Base in Abuja

An explosion near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja on Monday afternoon left one person dead and another injured in what security sources suspect may have been a failed bombing attempt.

The blast occurred around midday, causing panic in the area as residents and passersby fled in fear.

Eyewitnesses said the victim—believed to be the individual handling the explosive—died instantly when the device, reportedly concealed in a rubber container, detonated near the military base.

“I just heard a loud bang, and people started running,” said a food vendor operating nearby, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “When I got closer, I saw someone lying still on the ground. It was terrifying.”

Security forces quickly cordoned off the scene, dispersing bystanders while emergency responders evacuated the injured victim to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Although initial reports suggested a suicide bombing, military personnel at the scene indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the explosive device may have been detonated remotely—possibly via a mobile phone—rather than being strapped to or carried by the deceased.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased or the motive behind the blast. Investigations are ongoing.

More updates to follow.
