The Bayelsa State Police Command has revealed that Olotu Omubo, leader of the Bobos cult group and a beneficiary of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, was killed by members of his own gang in a plot to take over the group’s leadership.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, made the disclosure during a press briefing in Yenagoa on Monday. He said investigations showed that Omubo’s death on April 24 along Goodnews Street in the Azikoro area of Yenagoa was orchestrated by insiders within the cult, contrary to earlier speculations of rival group involvement or a retaliatory hit by hired killers.
Omubo, a native of Nembe in Nembe Local Government Area, also led the Phase 2 group of Amnesty beneficiaries in Bayelsa. His assassination initially raised suspicions of external involvement, given his criminal record and alleged orders of previous killings.
Commissioner Idu clarified that the killing stemmed from an internal power struggle within the Bobos cult. “Ninety-five percent of intelligence available to the police indicates it was an intra-cult leadership tussle. His killers made it appear as though it was an attack by a rival group to cover their tracks and benefit from his removal,” he explained.
Despite Omubo’s notoriety, the Commissioner expressed concern that previous attempts to hold him accountble, such as a case involving illegal possession of firearms, were thwarted by external influences. “He was controversially released, and this is why I have always warned against influencing the release of known criminals—it only leads to disastrous consequences,” Idu said.
In a broader crackdown on criminal activities, the police also announced the arrest of nine suspects linked to cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and murder.
Among those arrested is Mohammed Adamu, 50, from Gombe State, and Adiamakubo Orubo, 37, over the disappearance of a 26-year-old tricycle operator, Ashiru Ishiaku, from Kano State. The incident occurred on April 29, 2025.
Another suspect, David Ngo, 36, identified as a member of the notorious Islanders cult group and native of Brass Local Government Area, was apprehended for allegedly stabbing one Goodwill Ovuru to death in Agudama-Ekpetiama, Yenagoa LGA, on April 16.
In Onopa community, police arrested Monday Daniel, 28, for allegedly participating in an armed robbery at the residence of one Amarachi Emeachi near Revenue House. The assailants reportedly stole a Redmi phone valued at N180,000.
On May 4, police also arrested Endurance Odambe Chinedu, 24, from Ndokwa-East LGA of Delta State, at Agbia community, Yenagoa, with 10 live cartridges. During interrogation, Chinedu confessed to being a member of the Black Axe confraternity. A search of his residence led to the recovery of a battle axe, a black beret bearing the cult’s insignia, and a crusher.
Commissioner Idu assured the public that the police remain committed to curbing cult-related violence and restoring safety across Bayelsa State
