A former chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), Kenneth Okonkwo, believes only a coalition can unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Okonkwo, who was the LP presidential campaign spokesman for the 2023 election, said no single candidate can match President Tinubu in the race for Aso Rock in the next bout of elections.
“No one single candidate can beat Tinubu alone, by whatever name they are called. The reason is this. In Nigeria, we have entered into the unfortunacy that you will not only win, but you have to secure your victory. So you need the elites to secure your victory, even if the people vote for you,” Okonkwo said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
“So if the elites come together, like they did in 2014 to confront Jonathan, in 2015, they were able to secure their victory when the people voted for them.”
When asked if the failure of a coalition means that Tinubu will walk into power, he said, “Outrightly, he will just walk into it”.
“Moving to 2027, I know that there will be a coalition. Whether it is going to be between Peter Obi and Atiku, I don’t know, but there will be a coalition. Why? Because that will be the only choice the opposition has to make any impact,” the actor-turned-politician said on the current affairs programme.
His comment comes amid talks of a coalition spearheaded by a former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Recently, a gale of defections has hit opposition parties. The latest to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is Delta State Governor Sheriff Oberevwori, who, alongside his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the oil-rich state, teamed up with the ruling party.
