New Terror Group ‘Mahmuda’ Kills Over 15 Vigilantes in North Central Nigeria
A newly emerged terror group known as *Mahmuda* has killed more than 15 vigilante members and civilians in a deadly attack on Kemanji, a rural community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria.
The group, which reportedly operates around the Kainji Lake National Park, spans parts of Kwara and Niger states and has taken control of several communities including Babana and Wawa Districts in Borgu LGA, Niger State.
Local sources disclosed that the militants, who claim allegiance to a jihadist ideology and speak mainly Hausa, have overrun the national park since their arrival five years ago, displacing security personnel and establishing a quasi-administrative system.
The Mahmuda group is said to collect levies from farmers and herders, impose religious restrictions, mount illegal roadblocks, regulate local disputes, and even coerce residents into forced labor.
According to security insiders and locals, the group may be a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, potentially operating with knowledge of some authorities due to its access to sophisticated weaponry. Some reports also suggest the militants may have migrated from the Benin or Niger Republic.
A recent voice note attributed to the group’s leader contained threats against nearby communities and demands for ransom from kidnapped victims.
The surge in militant activity in the area, locals say, has been exacerbated by ungoverned forest spaces and the collapse of state presence, allowing criminals, illegal loggers, and extremists to thrive
