Shehu Sani, a former Nigerian senator, has downplayed Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stating that it won’t impact the ruling party’s fortune in the 2027 elections.
According to Sani, El-Rufai’s move is “a good riddance” as he was a liability to the party in Kaduna State.
Sani emphasized that El-Rufai’s defection won’t make a difference, as he no longer holds any political relevance. He also expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani will be re-elected in 2027.
The statement from Sani’s office revealed that El-Rufai’s defection was prompted by the return of Sani and other prominent politicians to the APC, which allegedly unsettled El-Rufai. Sani’s primary political interest in 2027 is to ensure Governor Uba Sani’s re-election as Kaduna State governor.
El-Rufai’s defection to the SDP has been seen as a significant move, but Sani remains unconvinced about its impact. Instead, he believes that the APC will emerge stronger in the 2027 elections.
