Akpabio vs. Natasha: Saraki Calls for Probe to Protect Senate’s Integrity
Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has weighed in on the ongoing rift between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging a transparent and unbiased investigation to safeguard the integrity of the Senate.
In a statement, Saraki expressed concern over the controversy, warning that it could damage the Senate’s credibility if not handled properly.
He emphasized that the institution should be protected above individual interests, calling on all parties involved—including their supporters within and outside the chamber—to be mindful of their actions and reactions.
Saraki recommended that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions conduct an open and impartial investigation into the matter.
He cited his own experience during the 8th Senate when he voluntarily appeared before the committee to address allegations against him, stressing that such transparency reassures the public and upholds the Senate’s integrity.
“We should not allow the Senate to be cast in the shroud of an institution encouraging sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, or disregard for standing rules. A fair and open inquiry is essential to establish the truth and protect the image of the Senate,” Saraki stated.
He reiterated that his stance was not to take sides but to ensure that due process is followed.
“I am neither stating that Akpabio is guilty nor expressing the opinion that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is right. My position is that an investigation is needed to find out the truth and protect the Senate’s integrity,” he clarified.
Saraki urged the leadership of the 10th Senate to uphold democratic values and prevent any attempts—open or subtle—to undermine the sanctity of the institution.
