Osun LG Polls: Police Raise Alarm Over Security Threats
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised serious concerns over the security situation in Osun State ahead of the planned Local Government elections, advising the state government to suspend the polls due to potential threats of violence and unrest.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF cited credible intelligence indicating that various political and interest groups were mobilizing to disrupt public peace and undermine democratic order. The police warned that proceeding with the elections under these volatile conditions could escalate tensions and endanger lives and property.
“The Force has assessed the current security landscape and determined that allowing the elections to proceed poses a significant risk. In the interest of public safety and national stability, we strongly advise the Osun State Government to suspend the elections,” the statement read.
The police also highlighted legal uncertainties surrounding the election, referencing a recent Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, 2025. According to the NPF, this judgment nullified an earlier Federal High Court decision and raised questions about the legality of the elections.
In light of these concerns, the NPF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while urging political stakeholders to exercise restraint.
“We urge all political parties and interest groups to prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens. The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to upholding democracy and ensuring peace across the country,” the statement concluded.
