In 2022, Kelly received a sentence of more than 30 years in prison for racketeering, sex trafficking, and sexually abusing followers, some of whom were children.
After hearing arguments in March, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals determined on Wednesday that the 58-year-old had exploited and sexually abused adolescents and young women by using his notoriety.
Kelly’s argument that prosecutors failed to provide evidence that he planned a racketeering operation to enlist women and little girls for sex was also dismissed by the three-judge bench.
“Enabled by a constellation of managers, assistants, and other staff for over twenty-five years, Kelly exploited his fame to lure girls and young women into his grasp,” they said.
“Evidence at trial showed that he would isolate them from friends and family, control nearly every aspect of their lives, and abuse them verbally, physically, and sexually.”
In a statement, Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, expressed her belief that the Supreme Court will accept an appeal.
She also criticised the court’s decision, calling it “unprecedented” and citing a judge named Richard J. Sullivan’s partial dissent.
“This was not restitution. This was an effort by the government to unfairly enrich government witnesses for their testimony,” she said.
