Hundreds Arrested in Trump’s Immigration Crackdown
Federal immigration agents have conducted the first major arrest operation under the Trump administration, resulting in nearly 500 arrests nationwide.
.According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), more than 460 individuals were detained between Tuesday and Wednesday in states including Illinois, Utah, California, Minnesota, New York, Florida, and Maryland.
Those arrested reportedly had criminal records, including charges of sexual assault, robbery, drug and weapons violations, and domestic violence. ICE also issued 420 detainer requests to notify the agency of the release of undocumented individuals from custody.
Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, stated the focus was on “public safety threats” and criticized sanctuary city policies for complicating enforcement.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker acknowledged the potential deportation of about 2,000 migrants from the Chicago area but decried the federal government’s lack of communication with the state. While Pritzker agreed violent criminals should be deported, he reaffirmed Illinois’ commitment to being a sanctuary state.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized that city and state laws, including the 2017 TRUST Act, protect residents from federal overreach and enhance public safety by fostering trust. Johnson also announced a digital campaign at over 400 CTA locations to educate Chicagoans on their rights if detained by immigration agents.
The Justice Department has directed prosecutors to investigate officials obstructing immigration law enforcement.
