Works Minister Inspects 3 Federal Projects
The Minister of Works, Engr. Nweze David Umahi, has conducted an inspection of three major federal road projects, reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure development and warning contractors against delays.
The projects inspected include the East-West Road, Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and the Bodo-Bonny Road, all critical to the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones.
At the East-West Road, Section III (Eleme Junction-Onne Junction), handled by Messrs Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), the Minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of work but directed the contractor to hasten progress. He warned that failure to meet the April 2025 deadline for a section of the project could lead to re-scoping and re-awarding of the contract.
On the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Section III (Umuahia-Aba), Engr. Umahi commended Messrs Arab Contractors (Nig.) Ltd. for their efforts but instructed them to deploy additional resources to meet deadlines. However, he expressed displeasure at the slow pace of work on Section IV (Aba-Port Harcourt) by Messrs China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), warning of contract termination if significant improvements are not made.
At the Bodo-Bonny Road, a crucial project featuring 17 bridges and reinforced concrete pavement, Engr. Umahi urged Messrs Julius Berger (Nig.) Plc to intensify efforts despite their work during the festive period.
The Minister emphasized the need for contractors to deliver on schedule in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure as a catalyst for growth. He directed Federal Controllers of Works to ensure at least four completed projects are ready for commissioning between February and May 2025.
Engr. Umahi reiterated the government’s resolve to take decisive action against underperforming contractors, including issuing termination notices for delayed projects. He assured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to completing inherited projects and new legacy initiatives.
“Every contractor must deliver on their promises. There will be no tolerance for delays this year,” he declared, reaffirming the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth nationwide.
