Port Harcourt Refinery: Tinubu Commends Buhari, Orders NNPC to Repeat Feat in Warri, Kaduna
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the successful revival of the Port Harcourt refinery.
The President described the achievement as a testament to the administration’s resolve to rebuild Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and address longstanding challenges in the oil and gas sector.
POLITICS DIGEST had earlier reported that NNPC commences crude oil processing from the plant and delivery of petroleum products into the market.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy) Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday, Tinubu expressed appreciation for the foundational efforts of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration initiated the comprehensive rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries.
He also extended gratitude to the African Export-Import Bank for its financial support, which proved instrumental in executing the Port Harcourt refinery’s revitalization project.
The President lauded the leadership of NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, for his determination in steering the complex project to fruition. He emphasized that this accomplishment signals a renewed hope for Nigeria’s energy sector, highlighting the commitment of the NNPCL and its partners to achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum refining.
Tinubu also directed the NNPCL to accelerate the reactivation of the second Port Harcourt refinery as well as the Warri and Kaduna refineries. This, he said, would complement the contributions of privately-owned refineries like the Dangote Refinery and position Nigeria as a leading energy hub in the region.
The President underscored his administration’s focus on developing the gas sector, describing it as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.
He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria moves away from the paradox of being a crude oil giant reliant on imported refined products. He stated that repairing the nation’s refineries is essential to ending this perception and achieving energy independence. The government, he added, is also focused on enhancing export capacity and fostering economic growth in line with its Renewed Hope Agenda.
Calling for integrity and accountability in all sectors, the President urged individuals and institutions involved in national service to remain steadfast and dedicated to the country’s progress.
He assured Nigerians that the administration’s policies aim to deliver sustainable prosperity and shared economic benefits for all.
