Kaduna Electric has disconnected the electricity supply to the Kaduna State Government House, the Governor’s Office, and other government agencies due to unpaid bills totaling N2.9 billion.

The power distribution company announced the disconnection on its official X account on Friday.

Kaduna Electric detailed that the government owes N1.166 billion for electricity consumed between January 2024 and July 31, 2024. Despite a payment of N256.9 million in May 2024, the state remains the largest debtor.

The disconnection followed extensive efforts to address the issue through consultations and reconciliations.

“The outstanding balance for electricity consumed from January to July 2024 is N1,166,856,991.87. Including historical debts, the total amount owed by the state now stands at N2,943,060,116.77,” the statement said.

The company noted that despite a recent payment of N256,920,963.88 made on May 9, 2024, for electricity used between September 2023 and December 2023, the state’s debt remains substantial.

This action follows a disconnection ultimatum issued by Kaduna Electric on July 21, 2024.

Earlier in July 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a 60 percent equity stake in Kaduna Electric by ASI Engineering Limited amid the company’s N115 billion debt crisis.
