The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command has arrested two brothers, Henry Ushie Odep, 34, and Emanuel Ushie Odep, 23, for allegedly impersonating the FCT Commandant, Commandant Olusola Odumosu, and defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians.
The NSCDC disclosed this in a press briefing today in Abuja, stating that the suspects were apprehended after a seven-month manhunt following the discovery of a fake Facebook account in the Commandant’s name in September 2023.
According to the NSCDC, “Emmanuel Ushie was the first to be arrested after being lured to Abuja. He then confessed to his involvement and implicated his elder brother, Henry, who was subsequently arrested in Delta State.
“Investigations revealed that Henry created the fake Facebook account upon his appointment as FCT Commandant in August 2023 and used it to defraud people. Emmanuel also admitted to withdrawing money sent to Opay accounts from Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals on his brother’s behalf”.
He said Henry reportedly confessed to being involved in online fraud since 2016 and admitted to defrauding people using other fake Facebook accounts, including one impersonating a retired Assistant Commandant General, Helen Amakiri, in 2016.
he further explained that the suspects reportedly used Opay, Moniepoint, and Palmpay accounts to receive money from victims, alongside two accounts belonging to an unsuspecting individual, Victory Chinagorom. They also revealed that a friend, Chibuike Okorie, who is currently living in Kuwait, introduced Henry to cybercrime.
Two other people, Amadi Chisom, 31, and Mrs. Okafor Evelyn, 24, were initially arrested alongside the Odep brothers but were later granted bail as investigations revealed they were not knowingly involved in the crimes.
Items recovered from the suspects include POS machines and mobile phones. The NSCDC has assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and the suspects will be prosecuted according to the law.
The commandant used this opportunity to warn cybercriminals to desist from their activities, stating that they would be apprehended. They emphasized their commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to fight all forms of criminality.
