The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) has dismissed the petition against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the $460,000 forfeited to the United States of America.
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, had in his petition urged the court to disqualify Tinubu’s candidacy on the basis of the forfeiture which he claimed disqualified the President by virtue of Section 137 of the Constitution, as amended.
Chairman of the PEPT in his judgement on Wednesday however ruled that the forfeiture was not criminal in nature and didn’t warrant the President’s disqualification.
The judge added that relevant correspondences from the US Embassy have also cleared Tinubu of any criminal charge in the US.
The court also pointed out that Mr. Tinubu has been able to enter and exit the United States without any legal impediments, indicating that he does not have an active criminal case in the country.
