The Benue State House of Assembly Wednesday suspended the 23 local government chairmen over what it described as “outright disregard to procedure and crass mismanagement of local government funds since they took over office”.
The state assembly also directed the chairmen to hand over the affairs of the local government areas and properties in their possession, including official vehicles to the DGSAs with immediate effect and proceed on suspension pending the completion of investigation into their books of accounts and other related matters.
In a sitting held Wednesday presided over by the Speaker Aôndona Dajoh, the House urged the Governor Hyacinth Alia to immediately proceed to set up caretaker committees in line with the Benue State Local Government law.
The House decision was based on report of the committee, headed by Hon Peter Ipusu, set last week to investigate the council chairmen.
The committee had requested that in order to conduct the review without any interference, the House should immediately suspend the chairmen in all the 23 local government councils and the legislative councils for conniving to mismanage public funds put in their trust.
