At least three people have been confirmed dead and multiple injured following a shooting in New Mexico, the United States.

The San Juan county sheriff’s office confirmed the incident in a statement.

Police said the suspect was killed, adding that two officers were shot.

The shooting happened on Monday morning near a public park.

“At this time, the details we have are that multiple officers from the Farmington Police Department were involved in an officer-involved shooting. One suspect was confronted and killed on the scene,” the statement reads.

“The suspect’s identity is unknown and there are no other known threats at this time.

“Two officers were shot, one from the Farmington Police Department and one from New Mexico State Police, both currently at San Juan Regional Medical Center being treated for their injuries and in stable condition.

“There are multiple civilian victims with at least 3 deceased. We will provide more details as they become available

The police asked residents to avoid the area and to select alternate routes of travel.

Schools in the area were put on a “preventative lockdown”, which means that school operations were going on as normal, but no one was allowed outside, and parents could pick up students, Roberto Taboada, Farmington Municipal Schools spokesperson, said.
