Nigerian onion traders have resumed cross-border exports to Ghana following the resolution of a dispute that had disrupted shipments and left several trucks stranded along the trade route.

The Regional Observatory of Onion in West and Central Africa confirmed that the outstanding issues affecting the movement of onions between both countries had been resolved after sustained discussions and interventions by relevant authorities and industry stakeholders.

The organisation’s President, Aliyu Maitasamu, said all trucks conveying onions between Nigeria and Ghana had been authorised to resume movement, while affected trucks had also been released.

The disruption had reportedly caused significant challenges for Nigerian exporters, with traders raising concerns over delays, harassment, trade bottlenecks and the safety of drivers and their consignments.

The suspension also affected regional commerce, with Ghana and other West African countries serving as important markets for Nigerian onion producers.

Maitasamu said the resolution followed recent interventions and dialogue between stakeholders in Nigeria and Ghana, with measures put in place to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

He urged onion traders and transport operators to comply with established trade regulations and safety procedures as normal operations resume.

Traders have welcomed the development, describing the reopening of the trade route as a major relief following weeks of uncertainty and financial losses.

One Lagos-based exporter said the resumption would help stabilise onion supply and prices across the sub-region, while allowing affected traders to gradually recover from losses incurred during the disruption.

The development is also expected to strengthen trade relations between Nigeria and Ghana and restore confidence along the cross-border onion supply chain.

With the movement of onion trucks now restored, stakeholders are expected to focus on ensuring that future disputes are resolved quickly and that agricultural trade between the two countries remains smooth and predictable.
